There's a lot of long definitions of what the Metropolitan Planning Organization is, and why we are here...but basically in a nutshell we are a primarily federally funded, federally mandated organization that makes sure transportation studies, plans and improvements are available to the public, and that transportation projects follow federal guidelines for safety, environmental justice, and air quality.
The Dover/Kent County MPO is the agency responsible for coordinating transportation planning and programming in Kent County, Delaware. The MPO's planning area includes all of Kent County, including the portion of Smyrna over the New Castle County line and the portion of Milford over the Sussex County line. Plans and programs that the MPO adopts outline how federal transportation funds will be spent. We work with government agencies, transportation agencies, key stakeholders, and of course THE PUBLIC.
The MPO’s mission has 6 core functions. These functions include (but are not limited to) identifying and evaluating transportation improvement options, identifying performance measure targets and monitoring implemented projects for target achievement, and involving the public as stakeholders and interested parties in the planning, implementation, and performance measurement of projects and programs.
